While reviewing 2007 in preparation for year end reports, I realized that many people have contributed to the Pickerington Public Library during the year and I would like to express the appreciation of the board of trustees, staff and myself. One of those much appreciated contributions was a significant monetary contribution by our benefactor Mary Meilwes, but there were many others. I would like to take this opportunity to thank those who contributed to the PPL.
The Friends of the Pickerington Public Library sponsored many of the programs at the PPL: the Summer Reading Program, Volunteer Recognition Brunch, Musical Interlude, Patches for Progress and Santa Saturday to name just a few. They also purchased 30 Microsoft licenses for library computers. They are truly our friends.
Some patrons made memorial donations to support the library’s collection. Many residents donated used books that were used in the collection. Those that could not be used were donated to the Friends of the Library group who sponsored book sales. The funds raised from the book sales were used to support the projects already mentioned.
Some of our patrons donated magazine subscriptions and we greatly appreciate their generosity. Mother Jones, Latina, Working Mother, Smithsonian, GST and Outdoor Photography are now available because of donations. And some of Pickerington’s residents dropped off used magazines and newspapers in our green and yellow recycling bin, we raised $90.16 and saved 28.43 cubic yards in the landfill!
Several businesses in the area donated prizes and supported library programs during the year. Barnes and Noble, Marcus Theater, Giant Eagle, Donatos, Beef O’Brady’s, DaVinci’s, Discount Drug Mart, Connell’s, Magic Mountain, Dairy Queen and McDonald’s were generous and supportive. The WalMart Foundation made a monetary donation.
The Violet Township Fire Department cheerfully furnished fire equipment and personnel for preschool story times. The Pickerington Police Department has also provided programming support. Dr. Sonya Moesle visited the library for preschool story time. Columbus Metropolitan Parks visited with story times and critters, both alive and dead.
The Kiwanis Club of the Pickerington Area sponsored the first Chalk on the Walk event and facilitated the Pickerington North Key Club’s Make a Difference Day project at the library. The Key Club also provided volunteer assistants for Santa Saturday.
Also, library volunteers provided hours of assistance by shelving returned materials, assisting at library programs and creating lovely artwork for the library windows. Some provided displays of artwork or photographs. Their dedication and labor made the public library Pickerington’s own.
The Pickerington Public Library has and continues to face financial challenges as we endeavor to offer a facility in which to “…know, understand and enjoy the world.” We thank those of you, named or unnamed, who assisted us in our mission. We deeply appreciate all of you and your support.
